The Skin’s New Enemy For 2020 – Maskne!

What is Maskne?

Maskne is a term now used to describe the breakout of blemishes, dry skin, dehydration, whiteheads, lumps and bumps in the skin around the lower face and jawline, all linked to us now having to wear a face covering.

Wearing a face mask means that when we exhale the bacteria is captured by the face mask and is now laying on the skins surface. Along with the sebum and dirt in the skin also being trapped.

When returning to work in July, it was only a matter of one day of wearing a face mask for 5 hours before my skin had produced a blemish. Three days later and this blemish had invited its friends along, and they were now having a party on my chin!

I had read about Balance Me PHA Clarifying Mist, and also featured it on my Instagram post. I have continued to use this product daily at work before, during, and after wearing my mask. It really is a miracle in a bottle for me. It keeps my skin hydrated, along with calming and preventing any blemishes. I can honestly say the blemishes have vanished since using Balance Me. This product is for everyone – male or female, young or old.

Balance Me are a British brand developed some 15 years ago by sisters Rebecca and Clare. Their products are all cruelty-free, and the packaging recyclable.

The PHA Clarifying Mist sprays the skin with a fine mist containing some amazing ingredients:

Witch Hazel – reduces inflammation, calms redness, and tightens pores

Kanuka Oil – a powerful antibacterial ingredient that clears congestion

May Chang – both antibacterial and antimicrobial to prevent blemishes forming.

Eucalyptus – packed with beauty essentials like anti-inflammatory fatty acids, vitamins A and C. It helps brighten, firm, address scarring and even out skin tone

Tips for keeping your skin in top condition when wearing a face covering

Always double cleanse at the end of the day to remove make-up, sweat, and bacteria that have built up during the day. Double cleansing doesn’t mean you have to use two different products. If you only have one then just use it twice.

When applying skincare products consider how your skin is feeling and looking right now. You may want to add in hyaluronic serum day and night, apply a hydrating face mask more often, or even a richer night product. Remember, you don’t have to wait until you are tired and it’s bedtime. I find it easier to give my skin attention when I actually get home from work.

If you have a reusable mask you must wear it once then wash it before wearing it again. Bacteria breeds at a rapid rate, so make sure you have a fresh one each day.

Do not share your mask with anyone! I recently heard of a person returning from a shop and taking off their mask, then passing it to a colleague for them to put on so that they could then go into the shop!  Yuck!

I have found the disposable mask the best for me, as it is not tight fitting and gives your skin some room to breath behind the mask. The silk mask has also been found to be breathable as well. You have to find what works for you.

This Balance Me PHA Clarifying Mist retails at £18 for 30ml and you can get it from https://www.balanceme.com

If your face masks are giving you Maskne, then this product is worth investing in.

Hi Tracy. Never heard that term before but I know what you mean. Great tips for keeping your skin in shape. Even when your not wearing a mask. I love all the tips and tricks in your blogs. Where do you get all this knowledge and information? Amazing. If the clarifying mist is as good as you say then £18 has got to be worth it. Looking forward to your next post.
